The modern blacksmiths test for hardenability is when the tool steel becomes non-magnetic or just a little above (for lowerr carbon steels).
When a magnet on a wire is not attracted to the hot steel it is ready to quench.
Always quench on a rising (increasing) heat, not after over heating beyond the hardenability temperature.
