Tonights demo is a forging exercise in forging steel pipe. What I am using is 2" schedule 40 black iron pipe (never galvanized).

This tool that I use is something I learned from Rob Gunter, It is constructed of two pieces of 3/8" or 1/4" X 2" hot roll Flat Stock with a slight radius cut into the top piece and the bottom piece. Picture is pretty well self explanatory. I call it a guilloine tool

BILL-EPPS :
02:40:30

Guillotine Tool. I heat the end of the pipe and start fullering it down about 1/2" from the very end. This will take about 2 or 3 heats. Keep working it by turning it around as you hit gently on top of the guillotine tool. Will explain at another time how to make this tool.

BILL-EPPS :

Fuller it down until it is about 3/16" OD, and then cut it off with a hot cutter as shown. Then turn the pipe up on the end cut the little point that is sticking up, cut 5 little slots in it approximately 70 degrees apart because the end of an apple has 5 little indentations in it.

Ray :
02:44:36

hmmmmm.. I wonder if you could use the guilloine to spiral a pipe?

BILL-EPPS :
02:47:16

When you are working a piece of pipe, duck tape the end that you are holding so that the heat doesn't travel up through the pipe and heat the end. After you have made these little cuts, we are going to taper the end a little bit creating 5 facets w/you hammer or flats because an apple has 5 sides.

BILL-EPPS :
02:48:13

Now we need a "bullet nosed" monkey tool. (3/4" round bar w/1/4" hole drilled in the end about 1 1/2" deep with the end rounded.

BILL-EPPS :
02:48:38

apple10.gif (3677 bytes)

apple11.gif (3084 bytes)

apple12.gif (3229 bytes)

BILL-EPPS :
02:50:14

here we have the end tapered down and the facets or flats on it. Take a good a heat, clamp in a vice and monkey tool the little point down that you have put the little cuts into until the end starts curling inward.

BILL-EPPS :
02:50:20

apple13.gif (3867 bytes)

BILL-EPPS :
02:51:49

Now we take a blunt chissel punch and put 5 grooves in the end between the flats or facets which are on the sides. This will finish up the bottom part of the apple.

BILL-EPPS :
02:52:06

apple14.gif (4566 bytes)

apple15.gif (4015 bytes)

BILL-EPPS :
02:54:25

Now we come back to the guillotine tool past your facets about 1 to 1-1/2" (whatever looks right) and start fullering it down again.

BILL-EPPS :
02:54:41

apple16.gif (4065 bytes)

apple17.gif (4123 bytes)

apple18.gif (4764 bytes)

BILL-EPPS :
02:56:34

We fuller it down until it is about 1/4" OD this time, and using a hot cutter we cut it off back past our fuller (This will give you the metal to work with to form the stem). Go to the face of the anvil and drawing the stem down, working it on 2 sides then rounding the corners off.

BILL-EPPS :
02:56:55

apple19.gif (4166 bytes)

apple20.gif (4756 bytes)

BILL-EPPS :
02:58:04

Now we go back to our bullet nose monkey tool and push the base of the stem down w/the apple sitting on the anvil.

BILL-EPPS :
02:58:16

apple21.gif (4014 bytes)

apple22.gif (4261 bytes)

BILL-EPPS :
02:58:59

Now just simply take the stem over the horn and curve it like an apple stem.

BILL-EPPS :
02:59:09

BILL-EPPS :
03:00:42

It should look something like this. I wire brush to make the steel shine, or you can use a brass brush to give it highlight. Then apply clear coat to seal it.

BILL-EPPS :
03:00:55

And that is all there is to making a little black apple.

BILL-EPPS :
03:01:15

Any questions?

flatthumb :
03:01:15

Is this a good seller Bill?

Paw-Paw :
03:01:25

Your Guillotine tool is similar to mine. I made a couple of different sets of "jaw" to go in it.

Don :
03:02:08

You make it look real easy Bill. But somehow i think not. :p

Scotsman :
03:02:18

if you did not have the guilloutine tool Bill what would be a good substitiute

BILL-EPPS :
03:02:21

Yes, these sell OK, they are a lot of fun to make. Good demo piece, and a great gift for the kids Teachers.

Paw-Paw :
03:03:05

Scotsman, you could use a spring fuller, but it'd take a little longer.

amarda :
03:03:25

What was the diameter of the pipe?

Scotsman :
03:03:26

it isn't that hard don...like everything it does take practice..but Bill always makes it look really easy>>:)

Paw-Paw :
03:03:33

Bill, may I ask what you charge for them?

BILL-EPPS :
03:04:00

yes Paw-Paw, I have 4 different sizes of these tools that I make, one 1/4", 1 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" blades.

amarda :
03:04:15

Also, how is the guillotine hinged?

Don :
03:04:29

My first one will prbably turn out to be apple sauce

Paw-Paw :
03:04:39

I just made a base, then made different top and bottom pieces.

BILL-EPPS :
03:04:43

I use about 2" pipe, the OD is really about 2 1/2"

Paw-Paw :
03:05:22

Don, that's what an "Uh Oh! Pile" is for! :)

Don :
03:06:16

Yes i know. I have a very large one. :)

BILL-EPPS :
03:07:07

amarda: The bottom blade has two pieces welded on either side, then I have a 1" sq. hardy shank welded on to the back of that. I drill a 3/8" hole through the side bars about 1" above the bottom blade. I insert the top blade and drill the same hole through it. I remove it and grind the corner off to where it can pivot. Then I come up another inch and just drill another hole. Insert a 3/8" bolt, and put a nut on the back side.

BILL-EPPS :
03:07:36

Paw, I sell these apples for $30.

BILL-EPPS :
03:07:55

Flat-thumb, will get right back to you.

BILL-EPPS :
03:08:43

Scotsman, just a simple spring fullering tool won't give you the depth that you need, so go ahead and make you a guillotine tool.

BILL-EPPS :
03:09:01

Flatthumb, what did you want to know about the tongs?

chris-anderson :
03:09:26

couldent you use a strate peen and a fulling hardie?

BILL-EPPS :
03:10:57

Chris, no, it wouldn't work too well. You have to go down so far and you need the radius on the top and the radius on the bottom
