Notice the striker standy by with a very long handled sledge.

Traditional Japanese hammers and sledges have the handle set way back in the head. This style of hammer was traditional World wide at one point. It is still used by western crafts people for certain types of work but has generaly been replaced by hammers with the handle nearly centered.
