Frank Turley teaching striking to Johann

Frank Turley of the Turley Forge Blacksmithing School teaching Johan Cubillos how to strike. 1/10/2004

Several years ago Johann wanted to go to Frank Turley's school but being a Venezuelan living in Costa Rica he had paperwork complications and could not get into the U.S. So Frank traveled to Costa Rica and gave lessons in Johann's shop in San Jose.

I knew Johann through Frank so when I went to visit my friend Josh Greenwood in Costa Rica in 2005 I took Josh to meet Johann and he in turn gave us a tour of famous ironwork in San Jose and introduced us to the brotheres Guillermo Vargas Vonella and Fabio Vargas Vonella a couple of old time Costa Rican blacksmiths. See our 2005 Costa Rica NEWS for photos and details.

Johann's paperwork difficulties were solved several years later when he volunteered to restore a famous statue in Costa Rica for the Venezuelan embassy. Blacksmithing wins the day!
