This is a simple little drive in the wall or porch hook. When I the resident blacksmith at the Old City Park in Dallas, I would make drive hooks by just bending the spike part of the hook over, but I had trouble driving them. So I came with the idea of making a head on the hook, but saw the same thing in a book written in the 1800's.

Bill-Epps :
20:30:22

This just goes to show that it has all been done before.

Bill-Epps :

Bill-Epps :

Start with piece of 1/4" rnd. about 8" long. Draw down to a point by hitting on 2 sides, rotate 90 deg, then rotate back. I make the point about as long as my hammer face is wide.

Bill-Epps :
20:32:46

Bill-Epps :
20:33:55

I bend the pointed part back over itself.

Bill-Epps :
20:34:06

Bill-Epps :
20:35:04

I short of square up the end. This will the part that I use for driving or like a nail head.

Bill-Epps :
20:35:17

Bill-Epps :
20:36:36

Then bending just the end, over the off side of the anvil, until the spike comes 90 deg. It doesn't show it in this illustration, but I take a good head, set the spike down and drive the head down a little bit to shorten it up.

Bill-Epps :
20:36:50

Bill-Epps :
20:37:53

Now come to the other end, and draw it down to a point. making it square, then knocking the corners off to make it round

Bill-Epps :
20:38:03

Bill-Epps :
20:39:19

I roll the sharp point over and make a little curl on the end.

Bill-Epps :
20:39:37

Bill-Epps :
20:40:32

After I curl the end over, the go to the horn and turn the hook.

Bill-Epps :
20:40:57

Then go to the horn of the anvil and turn the hook.

Bill-Epps :
20:41:07

Bill-Epps :
20:42:52

Then it should look something like this. I make these out of round and square stock, the square ones I put a twist in, and charge a $1 more.:)

Bill-Epps :
20:43:41

We call these a drive hook. Great for hanging plants from the eve of the house, can hang dinner bells from them, extgension cords, unrully children, old ladies boyfriend. >:P

Allen :
20:43:47

Bill - how much to you charge for these??

climb-back :
20:43:52

if the head upsets, does the cold shut open when driving?

Bill-Epps :
20:44:07

That's all for tonight. Are there questions?

Jock-D :
20:44:45

Bill, I've made a million drive hooks but never with a "head". They could be decorated if someone wanted "fancy"

Bill-Epps :
20:45:09

You shouldn't get a cold shunt. If you have it good and hot when you set it down. and when you make your turn, make it as short as possible. Mine are no more than 1/4"

Bill-Epps :
20:45:41

I charge $4 for smooth ones, $5. for square twisted ones.

Bill-Epps :
20:46:11

It doesn't take long to make one for a demo at a show, after you have made a few hundred.

Jock-D :
20:46:51

The only trouble I've had is getting in a hurry and quenching mild steel. Sometimes hooks would get hard enough to break at the corner.

Allen :
20:47:49

They work great around camp. They can be removed easily with just a twist.

Bill-Epps :
20:47:49

That is the reason I make the spike end first, so it has time to cool efore I quench the qhole hook.

climb-back :
20:49:45

Bill, how would you upset that head?

Bill-Epps :
20:51:30

Set it over the edge of the anvil with the head sticking up and the spike sticking down, and give it a good solid square blow. down, an

Willie :
20:53:52

I made one about 8 years ago that ended up being driven into an oak stump being used as an anvil stand that had been seasoning for about 30 years. We haven't been able to get the hook out. Makes a good handle for the stump.

Willie :
20:56:14

Bill, I like your idea of the head on the hook. I am going to give it a shot.

Bill-Epps :
20:56:23

Climb-back, that is the problem I had, so had to do it better so folks would buy all the ones on the table, don't you see. and usually they do buy them. I need a full time hook maker sometimes.

Ntech :
20:57:19

Bill, if you make a flat with a hole on the end instead of the point, you can attach with a screw or nail.

dimag :
20:59:47

Hey Bill, what code shows the head part,I make a few of those hooks and have yet to put a decent head on one.I'll check it after it slows down in here.

Bill-Epps :
21:00:49

Yeah, Ntech, we make those too, call them screw hooks, both smoth and twisted.

Bill-Epps :
21:02:58

Dimag, here it is.

Bill-Epps :
21:03:35

climb-back :
21:04:43

its the fish hook barb problem ..think I have to forge weld the lap a little

Bill-Epps :
21:05:55

You can Climb-back, but it is not really necessary.

Willie :
21:08:52

Bill, do you weld the head or is is just bent over and driven back on itself?

Bill-Epps :
21:09:30

Just bent over and driven back into itself.
