Anvils in America, THE book about anvils

Emerald Koch Collection

Hornless French Block Anvil

Hornless French Anvil

Provided by Emerald Koch BlacksmithParadise.com. Digital image processing by Jock Dempsey.

I love the use of simple forging techniques to produce decorative features on these old anvils. The combination of chamfering and fullering to produce pyramidal corners and the effect of a nose on the central column of the anvil is great blacksmithing. While many call these "church window" anvils I see faces in the eye sockets and "nose". I also like the steps on these and other anvils made simply by welding on blocks of wrought iron.
